Obituary

Charles Ernest (Charlie) Bishop
3rd July 1930 - 15th September 2008

Charlie Bishop died peacefully in Christchurch Hospital on 15th September 2008 after a short illness.
He and wife Iris had entered for the 2008 Masters Oceania Track & Field Championships held in Townsville at the end of July but two days before they were due to travel the trip had to be cancelled on medical advice.
This came as a shock to all of those who were due to travel and stay with Charlie and Iris in Townsville as it was later on to his fellow competitors.
Charlie and Iris had competed at every previous Oceania Masters Track & Field Championships starting with the inaugural championships in Fiji in 1982. He had only missed competing in one Masters National Track & Field Championships i.e. the first one in Christchurch 1975. He had also competed in four World Masters Track and Field Championships as well as several overseas Masters Games.
His best success was at the 8th Oceania Championships in Papeete, Tahiti in 1996 where he won the M65 Hammer, Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump.
Having worked in the farming community for many years he was a very strong person and this strength came through in later years where he was starting to beat some of the competitors who had previously beaten him. He really enjoyed the Weight Pentathlon. Charlie had a cycling background having been successful in such races as the Timaru to Christchurch and the Christchurch to Akaroa in his younger days. He also competed twice in the Christchurch to Akaroa “Le Race” in recent years.
He was also a keen and competitive indoor bowler playing up to four times a week and having many successes.
Charlie was also an official for Athletics Canterbury for over 25 years.
He was respected by his fellow competitors as helpful and friendly and a good Kiwi bloke.
Charlie is survived by his wife Iris, daughters Shirley and Janice, and grandchildren Bradley, Hayden, Jordan and Delia.
